Summary

A watching brief maintained during the construction of a ménage at this site in 2021 recorded two large probable quarry pits and a pair of parallel ditches. None of these features produced any find but it thought they were most probably medieval or post-medieval in date. It should be noted that these remains were all observed close to the southern edge of the site, within the one area in which natural geological deposits were fully exposed. It is possible that further remains were present elsewhere, beneath the undisturbed remnants of the subsoil layer.

Map

February-March 2021. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of ménage.
A fairly large rectangular area was stripped, although across much of the plot the subsoil layer was not fully removed, potentially obscuring any remains present. Natural geological deposits were though exposed in a 5m wide band at the southern edge of the site. Two large probable extraction pits and a pair of adjacent north-to-south aligned ditches were recorded in this area. No finds were recovered from these features, although it is suggested they were most probably medieval or post-medieval in date.
