Summary

An excavation at this site in 2012 recorded a undated ditch and a number of natural features. The only other feature of note was a probable metalled surface that was likely to represent the remains of a former trackway. It is thought that this trackway was most likely post-medieval in date.

Map

February-March 2012. Strip Map and Sample Excavation.
Excavation of site prior to installation of replacement water main (Field 3).
This work exposed a small number of undated features, including an east-to-west aligned ditch and a number of irregular probable tree-throw hollows.
An east-to-west aligned band of compacted gravel recorded at the western end of the site appeared to lie within a shallow hollow and was interpreted as a metalled surface associated with a former trackway. It was regarded as probably post-medieval as it overlay a deposit thought to be a ploughing headland.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the various linear cropmarks previously recorded in the vicinity of this site (NHER 12997).
No finds were recovered in this field.
Information from draft report. HER copy awaited.
