Summary

Window sampling at this location in 2020 revealed no evidence for archaeologically-significant deposits. A variety of natural alluvial deposits were shown to be overlain by demolition deposits that presumably related to the gasworks that had previously occupied the site (NHER 62805). There was therefore no evidence for surviving remains associated with the earthwork defences known to have been constructed in the vicinity during the English Civil War (see NHER 5486).

Map

September 2020. Borehole Survey.
Window sampling at proposed development site.
The line of five samples taken encountered natural deposits at between 0.35m and 1.42m below ground level. These were alluvial layers likely to include both tidal flat deposits and riverine deposits associated with the River Nar. They were overlain by a horizon of demolition debris that contained 19th-century bricks and presumably related to the gasworks that previously occupied the site (NHER 62805). There was therefore no evidence for surviving remains associated with the earthwork defences known to have been constructed in the vicinity during the English Civil War (see NHER 5486). These most likely lay to the north.
