Full Description
May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 17 October 2022.
February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT04; Trenches 115-127).
The 13 trenches excavated at this location revealed a small number of features, all of which lay at the eastern end of the site. These included three roughly east-to-west aligned ditches, the southernmost of which produced a small quantity of Roman pottery and fragments of a possible Roman tile. The other ditches were undated, although the northernmost of the two was potentially post-medieval, as it appears to have coincided with a former field boundary depicted on the Weybourne tithe map of 1838 (S2).
Also investigated was a large features of uncertain nature in the south-east corner of the site. This was more than 1.46m deep and filled by a sequence of charcoal-flecked silty sand deposits. It was sealed by a compact stony layer interpreted as a modern road surface. This layer was though found to contain two medieval pottery sherds.
There was no evidence for surviving remains associated with the military camp present during the 20th century (NHER 11335).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
