Full Description
Small mound in front of Bolwick Hall (NHER 7523) - beech tree cut down (and another on opposite side of stream - refers to NHER 11276).
T. Wake, 1939.
?Tumuli or landscape gardening - probably site of medieval Bolwick.
R.R. Clarke (NAU).
Grassed mound 16m diameter, 1m high in parkland - probably landscaping.
A.J. Lawson (NAU), 6 February 1975.
September 2002.
Some 12m diameter, 1m high, supporting six twenty year old conifers. One large rabbit hole on mound.
H. Paterson (A&E), 9 September 2002.
January 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
An undated earthwork mound (see above) is seen on aerial photographs and recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S1-S2). A possible associated section of ditch can also be seen on the visualised lidar data. The mound and ditch may relate to a post medieval landscape garden feature associated with Bolwick hall and park (NHER 7523 and 44782). The mound has been previously suggested to relate to medieval settlement and a possible Bronze Age barrow, although, these interpretations are less likely. It is also possible that the mound may be natural in origin. Further mounds have been recorded within the park to the south and west (NHER 11276, 64312 64313, 64314). The feature is not recorded the readily available historic maps (such as S3). The monument polygon has been updated.
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 17 January 2022.
