Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded a number of strong discrete anomalies of uncertain origin. Subsequent trial trenching demonstrated one group of anomalies was associated with a substantial probable brick kiln and a cluster of adjacent pits. A number of undated ditches were also recorded. Finds were limited to a small number of Neolithic worked flints and a two Early Iron Age pottery sherds.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 3901).
This survey identified a number of strong discrete anomalies of undetermined origin that potentially represent archaeologically-significant remains.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies and various other areas of magnetic disturbance were probable caused by ferrous material on or near the surface (most likely modern debris).
Other amorphous anomalies are of probable natural origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT46; Trenches 520-523).
The four trenches revealed a probable brick kiln and a number of pits and ditches. The substantial probable brick kiln was only partially exposed and not subject to excavation during this phase of work. This structure and a cluster of adjacent pits coincided with a group of anomalies recorded during the preceding geophysical survey. Sample excavation of two of the pits recovered no convincing dating evidence, with only a single Neolithic worked flint found. An undated linear feature interpreted as a possible beam slot was also recorded. An extensive layer encountered in the same trench as these remains was also left unexcavated, although another Neolithic work flint and two Early Iron Age pottery sherds were collected from its surface.
Four ditches were recorded, two aligned roughly north-to-south and two north-west to south-east. All were undated.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
