Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2021 and 2022 uncovered a small number of pits and ditches. These remains were mostly undated, the one exception being a ditch that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 39).
This survey identified a north-to-south aligned linear anomaly at the northern end of the site that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Alderford tithe map (S2). A number of more fragmentary linear and curvilinear anomalies in the vicinity of this feature may also represent archaeologically-significant remains. The most extensive (and convincing) of these is a north-east to south-west aligned response. The only other response of note is a single strong discrete anomaly of undetermined origin in the southern half of the site.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies and various other areas of magnetic disturbance were probable caused by ferrous material on or near the surface (most likely modern debris).
Other amorphous anomalies are of probable natural origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 April 2025.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT48; Trenches 533-539).
The seven trenches excavated at this location uncovered three ditches and two pits, all of which lay in the northernmost part of the site.
A north-east to south-west aligned ditch corresponded with one of the linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey. Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. A north-to-south aligned ditch that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Alderford tithe map (S2) had also been identified by the geophysical survey. A single medieval pottery sherd was recovered from this feature. A third, north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch and the two pits uncovered were all undated.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 April 2025.
