Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 identified a small possible ring-ditch but little else of likely archaeological significance. Subsequent trial trenching exposed a potentially related ditch close to the recorded position of the possible ring-ditch but unfortunately this produced no dating evidence. An undated pit was the only other feature identified at this location.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 4 September 2023.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 4401).
This survey identified a small possible ring-ditch at TG 1188 1630 with a diameter of approximately 10m.
Other response of note included an intermittent north-to-south aligned linear anomaly at the eastern end of the site that potentially represents an infilled field boundary ditch.
Several short, irregular curvilinear anomalies are regarded as being of indeterminate original and may therefore represent archaeologically-significant remains - although a natural origin is probably more likely.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 September 2023.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT56; Trenches 576-582).
A trench positioned to coincide with the possible ring-ditch identified by the preceding geophysical survey identified a potentially related west-north-west to east-south-east aligned ditch, but unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered.
The other six trenches excavated at this location revealed only a single pit undated pit.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 September 2023.
