Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 recorded two linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches associated with post-medieval or earlier field boundaries. Subsequent trial trenching saw the investigation of both of these features, although no finds were recovered. Several other undated pits and ditches were also recorded.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 4601).
This survey identified a north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly likely to represent an infilled field boundary ditch. Although no corresponding feature is shown on the available 19th-century maps, the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2) does mark two mature trees on the same line as this anomaly, suggesting it does indeed mark the line of a former boundary. A similarly-aligned linear anomaly and a cluster of discrete patches of magnetic disturbance recorded to the south correspond with a former field boundary that is shown on this map.
The only other responses of note are several curvi-linear anomalies regarded as being of undetermined origin. These may represent archaeologically-significant remains, although a natural original is probably more likely.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT59; Trenches 588‐598).
The five trenches excavated at this location exposed several ditches and two pits, none of which produced any dating evidence. Two of the ditches did though coincide with anomalies recorded by the preceding geophysical survey, both of which were probably associated with former post-medieval or earlier field boundaries.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
