Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2021 and 2022 recorded little in the way of significant remains. An initial geophysical survey recorded little of potential archaeological interest, within only anomalies of uncertain origin recorded. Subsequent trial trenching uncovered only a single linear feature. The date of this feature was uncertain, finds being limited to a small number of prehistoric worked flints.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 19 February 2025.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 48).
This survey revealed nothing of definite archaeological interest. The more notable responses include a single strong discrete anomaly and several weak and irregular linear anomalies – all of which are regarded as being of undermined origin.
The majority of the other anomalies were probably the result of either variations in the underlying geology or recent agricultural activity.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 February 2025.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P3TT19; Trenches 1177-1180).
The four trenches revealed only a single feature – the terminus of a ditch or gully. This feature produced a small number of prehistoric flints but these were most likely residual (comprising pieces of both Mesolithic/Neolithic and possible Bronze Age date).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 February 2025.
