Summary

Several geophysical surveys undertaken at this location between 2017 and 2022 all produced largely negative results. A single trial trench excavated in 2021 did though reveal a probable ditch terminus containing several Roman tegula fragments. Further limited trial trenching in 2022 revealed no further archaeologically-significant remains.

Map

October 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS23).
This survey of the northern half of the site revealed little of potential archaeological interest. The only responses of note are two fragmentary north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomalies at the eastern edge of the field, both of which are regarded as being of undetermined origin.
A series of other linear anomalies are the result of modern ploughing, while scattered discrete ferrous response were probably caused by objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

October-November 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Area 8).
This survey of a strip running through the southern half of the site revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
Two large amorphous responses were almost certain of natural origin and a number of discrete dipolar anomalies probably represent ferrous material on or near the ground surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

April-May 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Trench 12).
The single trench excavated at this location revealed what appeared to be the terminus of a north-to-south aligned ditch, the fill of which contained three fragments of Roman tegula. Although this fill appeared to be quite charcoal rich a sample was found to contained little else of interest.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 64).
This survey of the southern half of the site had largely negative results with the only responses of note being two short north-west to south-east aligned linear anomalies. These are regarded as being of undetermined origin and don’t necessarily represent sub-surface remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT84; Trenches 736-738).
Three trenches were excavated at this location, two to the north of the Anglian Water pipeline and one to the south.
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded and no finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 March 2024.
