Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 revealed little of potential archaeological interest, with only linear and discrete anomalies of undetermined origin recorded. Subsequent trial trenching also had largely negative results, with just a single ditch recorded. Although this feature contained two sherds of Early Bronze Age pottery this material was potentially residual, particularly as the line of this ditch appears to have been continued to the east by a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 6801).
This survey revealed nothing of definite archaeological significant. A number of responses are though regarded as being of undetermined origin and could therefore potentially represent archaeological remains. These include a single strong discrete anomaly and several somewhat irregular linear anomalies.
The northernmost part of the surveyed area was obscured by magnetic disturbance caused by an overhead powerline.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT91; Trenches 758-762).
Archaeologically-significant remains were limited to an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditch, which appeared in two of the five trenches excavated. Two Early Bronze Age pottery sherds and a Neolithic/Bronze Age flint flake were recovered from the single slot excavated. Although these finds raise the possibility that this was a prehistoric feature, it is possible that they were residual - particularly as the line of this ditch appears to have been continued to the east by a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
