Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2022 identified little of definite archaeological interest. Subsequent trial trenching revealed only a small number of ditches and a single pit. One of the ditches was associated with a former post-medieval field boundary but the other features were all of uncertain age. There was though some limited evidence for prehistoric activity at this location, with a small number of Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flints and a single Early Iron Age pottery sherd recovered.

Map

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 24 February 2025.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 7601).
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies, including one north-north-west to south-south-east aligned response that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Intwood tithe map (S2). A pair of adjacent east-to-west aligned linear anomalies at the western end of the site also potentially represent sub-surface remains.
Other responses of note include a tight cluster of strong discrete anomalies at TG 1839 0350, although these are regarded as being of undetermined origin.
Various other, more amorphous anomalies are probable the result of natural variations in the underlying geology.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 February 2025.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT100; Trenches 812-824).
The 13 trenches excavated at this location revealed only three ditches and a pit, the majority of which were of uncertain date. There was some limited evidence for prehistoric activity, with a small number of residual Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flints recovered and a single Early Iron Age pottery sherd found in an otherwise undated ditch. The other ditches included a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned feature that had been identified by the preceding geophysical survey and corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Intwood tithe map (S2). A single late post-medieval pottery sherd was recovered from this feature.
None of the other geophysical anomalies investigated were found to be associated with sub-surface remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 February 2025.
