Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2021/2022 identified a linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps but little else of potential archaeological interest. Subsequent trial trenching in 2022 revealed several ditches, none of which produced any dating evidence.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2023.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (Area 7902).
This survey identified not responses of obvious archaeological significance. Although a north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly was identified this corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Keswick tithe map (S2).
Although a number of other scattered, fragmentary linear anomalies were also recorded these are all regarded as being of undetermined origin and therefore not necessarily associated with archaeologically-significant remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2023.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (P2TT104; Trenches 840-849).
The ten trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of scattered ditches and a modern pit. The ditches displayed a variety of alignments and were all undated.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2023.
