Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017 identified a number of linear anomalies, at least two of which are likely to represent infilled ditches. One corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps but the other is differently aligned and likely to represent an element of an earlier field system. The latter also appears to coincide with a cropmark visible on aerial images of the site (see NHER 18191 for further discussion of this and other cropmarks noted in this field). The majority of the other geophysical anomalies recorded were of probable natural or agricultural origin.

Map

October 2017. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on possible route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable (GS25).
This survey identified various linear anomalies, including a number of fragmentary response of uncertain origin in the eastern half of the site. At least one is of probable archaeological significance, being as it appears to coincide with a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear cropmark visible on an aerial photograph of the site (S1). Although undated this and a parallel cropmark are clearly unrelated to the former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps, suggesting they represent elements of an earlier field system. It is potentially notable that the alignment of these features is similar to that of a substantial enclosure of possible prehistoric or Roman date visible as a distinct cropmark towards the southern end of the field. See NHER 18191 for discussion of this and the other cropmarks noted in this field.
Other linear anomalies identified by this survey include a north-to-south aligned response that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Bodham tithe map of 1841 (S2). Two broad bands of magnetic disturbance are almost certainly geological in origin as both can be seen to coincide with wide sinuous cropmarks running the full length of the field.

May 2018. Desk-based Assessment.
Environmental Impact Assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm on the historic environment. This study incorporated the results of an initial walkover survey and the first phases of geophysical survey.
See relevant chapter of Environmental Statement and associated appendices for further detail (S3).
