World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: High Street, Junction of Kirkgate Lane, Wighton.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding floriated cross. It is used to commemorate fourteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly five men from the parish who died in World War Two. It is described with “a diamond-shaped piercing through its centre, on a tapering four-sided shaft with a sword of sacrifice carved in relief to the front face.” The shaft is situated on a “square plinth with a moulded cap and foot on a two-stepped base.” The whole monument is enclosed with “decorative iron railings set in a concrete base” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plinth, carved in relief. The former World War One dedication is around the top of the plinth, on each of the four faces (Inscription A) (S5). Below this dedication, each face is dated along with the associated names listed underneath, and this includes one face with the latter World War Two dates and names (Inscription B) (S4).
