Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two addition, constructed from stone in the form of a small freestanding Latin cross. This memorial was erected after 1920 to commemorate seventeen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly one man from the parish who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in November 2019.

Location: Church of St Margaret, Church Road, Kirstead.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a small freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate seventeen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly one man from the parish who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a block that bears a relief-carved shield. The block stands on a square plinth with rounded corners. The plinth has buttresses to each side with moulded caps and dressed quoins” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plinth in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication is to the front, with the seventeen associated names on the rear (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dates are also to the front, along with the single associated name (Inscription B) (S4).

Inscription A: IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ & SOME NEIGHBOURS WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE// (17 Names).
Inscription B: 1939 – 1945/ (NAME).
