Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020 revealed a number of linear anomalies likely to represent ditches associated with late post-medieval and post-medieval or earlier field boundaries. Subsequent trial trenching in 2020 uncovered four ditches, the majority of which were similarly aligned to the linear geophysical anomalies. These features produced no dating evidence, although one ditch corresponded with a former boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.

Map

October-November 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Area 16).
This survey identified a series of north-to-south and east-to-west aligned linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches. Two correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Great Melton tithe map (S1) and it is likely that many of the other anomalies represent earlier elements of the same field system. A small number of differently-aligned linear anomalies may represent earlier field boundaries, although it is less certain that these are archaeological in origin. Other response of potential interest include several strong discrete anomalies of undetermined origin in the southernmost part of the site.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or near the ground surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

April-May 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Trenches 26-28 and 98).
The four trenches excavated at this location revealed four ditches – three aligned roughly north-to-south and one north-west to south-east. None of these features produced any dating evidence, although one of the north-to-south aligned ditches corresponded with a former boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
