Summary

A geophysical survey of parts of this site in 2020 revealed a number of linear anomalies likely to represent ditches associated with late post-medieval and post-medieval or earlier field boundaries. Several trial trenches excavated within an adjacent area in 2020 revealed no archaeologically-significant remains.

Map

October-November 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Areas 19 and 44).
This survey saw the examination of two relatively narrow strips, which converged at the eastern end of the field.
A number of linear anomalies were recorded, several of which correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Great Melton tithe map (S1). A number of other, similarly-aligned and perpendicular linear anomalies may represent ditches associated with earlier elements of this field system. These include a linear anomaly running parallel to the one of the 19th-century boundaries, suggesting this potentially followed the line of what was original a trackway. Other, weaker and more fragmentary linear anomalies are all regarded as being undetermined origin.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies and areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the surveyed areas probably represent ferrous material on or near the ground surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

April-May 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Trenches 33-35).
These trenches were opened in the northernmost part of this site, in an area beyond the strips examined by the preceding geophysical survey. No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded and no finds recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
