Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020 and subsequent limited trial trenching in 2021 identified two ditches that both correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th century maps. The geophysical survey identified a number of other linear anomalies that may represent archaeologically-significant remains, although all are regarded as being of undetermined origin.

Map

October-November 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Area 45).
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies, including two north-north-west to south-south-east aligned responses that clearly correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Wramplingham tithe map (S1). It is possible that at least some of the other linear anomalies represent archaeologically-significant remains, although all are regarded as being of undetermined origin.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies and areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the surveyed areas probably represent ferrous material on or near the ground surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

April-May 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Trenches 36-38).
Three trenches were excavated at this location, all of which lay to the north of the strip examined by the preceding trial trenching. A single ditch was recorded, which corresponded with both a geophysical anomaly and one of the former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. Fragments of 20th-century bottle glass were recovered from its fill.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
