Summary

A watching brief maintained during the installation of a new sewer pipeline in 2013 recorded a number of undated possible pits at this location. It should be noted that these remains were recorded in far from ideal conditions during the excavation of the pipe trench itself. Overburden was also not fully removed during the initial strip of the working easement, with the surviving subsoil layer potentially masking any additional remains present. A geophysical survey along the route of another pipeline in 2020 revealed nothing of archaeological interest. Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2021 had similarly negative results.

Map

October-December 2013. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new sewer pipeline (Field G).
The working easement was stripped of topsoil to a depth of c.0.40m, with nine machine-dug test holes demonstrating that the surviving subsoil was between 0.16m and 0.33m deep. None revealed archaeologically-significant remains. A number of possible pits were though noted close to the eastern edge of the field during the subsequent excavation of the pipe trench itself. No finds were recovered and it is noted that at least two of these features were potentially natural in origin.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.225).

October-November 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Area 28).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant responses.
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies and areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the surveyed area were probably caused by ferrous material on or near the ground surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2025.

April-May 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Norwich to Wymondham water pipeline (Trench 64).
The single trench excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2025.
