NHER 66446 (Monument) - Undated ditch and possible traces of medieval or early post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation

October 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline (Area 5).
This survey identified a series of roughly parallel, east-to-west aligned linear anomalies in the northern half of the site which are interpreted as the possible ploughed-out remnants of an area of medieval or early post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation.
Numerous discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to have been caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).

September 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline (Trenches 26 and 27).
The two trenches excavated at this location revealed a north-to-south aligned ditch. This feature was undated, although its position and orientation suggests it was unlikely to be of great antiquity.
A single medieval pottery sherd was recovered from the topsoil in the northernmost trench.
