Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2021 revealed a pair of Roman ditches which appeared to truncate an extensive, flat-based pit that also produced Roman pottery. It is thought this large feature was potentially timber lined. An undated post-hole and two undated ditches were also recorded at this location.

September 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Anglian Water Bexwell to Bury St Edmunds pipeline (Trenches 79-81).
The three trenches excavated at this location revealed several ditches and a large potentially timber-lined feature.
The ditches included a pair of intercutting north-west to south-east aligned features that produced a total of 11 Roman pottery sherds, a single potentially Late Iron Age pottery sherd and several fragments of animal bone. These appeared to truncate the fill of an extensive, relatively shallow, flat-based feature that had potentially had a timber lining. An additional 11 Roman pottery sherds were recovered from the main fill of this large pit, which was truncated by a post-hole of uncertain date.
A north-north-west to south-south-east ditch to the south of these Roman remains and a north-to-south aligned ditch to the north were both also undated. The orientation of the latter does though suggest it was probably of relatively recent date.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 April 2023.
