Full Description
Two groups of military buildings associated with Downham Market airfield (NHER 2455) are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. Nothing is depicted at this location on an Ordnance Survey Six-inch map published in 1952 (S1), suggesting that most, if not all of these structures had been removed by this time. A large concrete pad at TF 6320 0258 represents either building footings and/or an area of hard standing associated with the World War Two site and the connecting access road was also constructed at this time. It is possible that further remains survive within the areas of woodland that now cover much of the remainder of the site. The felling of trees within Sheep Hill Plantation to the west exposed several brick-built air raid shelters and the concrete footings of various other World War Two buildings (see NHER 63551 for further details).
See NHERs 63351, 65670, 66474-66477 and 66479-66483 for details of the other satellite sites associated with the World War Two airfield.
