Full Description
Several groups of military buildings associated with Downham Market airfield (NHER 2455) are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. Various types of buildings were present, including several large probable accommodation blocks and numerous smaller Nissen hut-type structures. Although a number of the more substantial buildings are depicted on an Ordnance Survey Six-inch map published in 1952 (S1) it is clear that many had already been removed and the majority of the remainder were subsequently demolished. A notable survival is an 'H'-shaped accommodation block at TF 6315 0324, which is still standing in apparently relatively unaltered form. It is in use as an agricultural building.
Although recent aerial imagery provides no evidence for surviving remains in the areas that are now arable land, structural remains may well still be present within the wooded and overgrown areas at the margins of the site.
See NHERs 63351, 65670 and 66474-66482 for details of the other satellite sites associated with the World War Two airfield.
