Full Description
November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Area 15).
This survey identified an adjoining pair of north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west aligned ditches, both of which correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Weston Longville tithe map (S1). A number of other, weak linear responses were also recorded, including a north-west to south-east anomaly that may represent an earlier element of the post-medieval field system. The other linear anomalies are though of a less certain nature, being much more fragmentary and displaying a range of alignments. All are regarded as being of uncertain origin.
Various other amorphous anomalies are of probable nature origin. Scattered dipolar discrete anomalies were probable caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a group of north-north-east to south-south-west aligned cropmarks thought to potentially represent a boundary or trackway of medieval to post-medieval date (NHER 50616).
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 February 2024.
May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Field TT11; Trenches 138-151).
The 14 trenches excavated at this location revealed only a number of scattered ditches and a single pit. None of these features produced any dating evidence, although two of the ditches clearly correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Weston Longville tithe map (S1). Three other ditches correspond with shorter linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey, including a north-west to south-east aligned feature potentially associated with the post-medieval field system.
The single pit recorded was a shallow feature with a sterile fill.
The presence of an overhead power line meant that no trenches coincided with the linear cropmarks recorded at this location (NHER 50616).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 February 2024.
