Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 had largely negative results, with nothing of definite archaeological interest recorded. Subsequent trial trenching did though reveal a number of scattered pits and ditches, although these were mostly undated. The most notable exception was a pit containing several Early Iron Age pottery sherds. A single Middle Iron Age sherd was also recovered from a nearby ditch.

Map

November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Area 19).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest. The one response of note was a strong discrete anomaly at the eastern end of the site, although this is regarded as being of indeterminate origin.
Various broad amorphous responses are almost certainly natural in origin. Scattered dipolar discrete anomalies were probable caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
See report (S1) for further details.

May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Field TT08; Trenches 188-197).
The ten trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of scattered ditches and pits and a single post-hole, the majority of which produced no dating evidence. The most notable exception was a small pit at the southern edge of the site that produced three Early Iron Age pottery sherds and a residual Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blade. A single Middle Iron Age pottery sherd was recovered from a north-east to south-west aligned ditch in the same part of the site. All other features were undated.
A sample taken from the single post-hole identified was found to contain a charred wheat grain and occasional weed seeds.
The small assemblage of unstratified finds recovered comprised several prehistoric worked flints (including a potentially Early Neolithic side and end scraper) and a single Early Iron Age pottery sherd.
See report (S2) for further details.
