Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 revealed little of potentially interest and subsequent trial trenching had similarly negative results, with no archaeologically-significant remains identified.

Map

November 2020-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Areas 24 and 25).
This survey identified a discrete anomaly at TG 09988 12765 with a distinctive inverse dipolar magnetic signal of a kind often associated with burnt material – suggesting this could represent the remains of a kiln or oven-type structure. The only other response of potentially archaeological interest is a short curvilinear anomaly at TG 10055 12853, although this is categorised as undetermined and may well be of natural origin.
Various scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably the result of ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
As in the area to the north (NHER 66618) there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a north-east to south-west aligned linear cropmark mapped between TG 10115 13001 and TG 10078 12913 (NHER 53681).
See report (S1) for further details.

May-July 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Norwich Western Link (Fields TT02 and TT03; Trenches 257-263).
The seven trenches excavated at this location revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. Although one of the trenches was positioned to target the short curvi-linear anomaly identified by the preceding geophysical survey, the discrete anomaly potentially associated with burnt material was not investigated. None of the trenches coincided with a north-east to south-west aligned linear cropmark recorded in the easternmost part of the site (NHER 53681).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
