Summary

A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a pipe trench at this location in 2013 recorded a brick and stone wall of uncertain date. It is possible that this was a garden wall associated with a number of now demolished dwelling that are known to have stood nearby. Worked limestone blocks in the wall had probably come from West Acre Priory (NHER 3881).

Map

February-March 2013. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of new water main.
The narrow pipe trench exposed a small wall built from limestone blocks and bricks at c. TF78061552. It is likely that the limestone blocks came from the remains of West Acre Priory (NHER 3881). It should be noted that to the east of this location the pipe trench passed through what would have been the grounds of several now demolished dwellings visible on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25-inch map (S1). It is therefore possible that the location of this structure was poorly recorded and it was actually a garden wall associated with these properties. This would explain both its relatively insubstantial nature and apparent isolation.
Two worked stones were recovered from the wall, both very weathered pieces of Weldon limestone. One is an oblong-shaped block, all corners of which have been carved with a roll and quirk. This would have probably been part of a decorate pillar, possibly from arcading. The other is a wedge-shaped block, the front of which has been smoothed.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.179).
