Location

Map sheet TM09SE
Civil Parish OLD BUCKENHAM, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

Map

June 2017. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of new water pipeline.
The narrow pipe trench excavated at this location (Trench 2) exposed an area of compacted flint gravel and chalk at TM 07377 92598 interpreted as a metalled surface associated with a former trackway. No trackways are shown at this location on the available 19th-century maps, suggesting this was potentially an earlier feature.
An initial metal-detector survey and a scan of the spoil from the excavated trench recovered no artefacts of archaeological interest.
Drill pits excavated at the ends of this section of the pipe trench (Drill Pits 1 and 2) revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
See report (S1) for further details.
