Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2016 revealed a wall that had probably been associated with a 19th-century cellar but no evidence for surviving earlier remains. Much of the site was shown to have been significantly truncated, most likely when concrete hard standing was lain down during the 1980s.

Map

October 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Two trenches were excavated, the northernmost of which demonstrated that the area immediately south of the malting building (NHER 47438) had been severely truncated, with demolition rubble lying directly above the natural chalk. This had most likely occurred when the existing concrete hard standing was lain down in the 1980s. This truncation had not extended into the area of the southern trench where a cellar wall was exposed. This was of probable 19th-century date and had probably been associated with one of the buildings that can be seen at this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25-inch map (S1). The remains of a 20th-century structure were also recorded.
No earlier features were identified and no finds of archaeological interest recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
