Full Description
May 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The two trenches excavated revealed a number of pits and ditches. Dating evidence was limited to a small assemblage of medieval pottery, with little evidence for earlier or later activity on the site.
The majority of the pits lay in the northernmost trench and were mostly relatively small and undated. The one exception was a large feature that produced medieval pottery, fragments of animal bone and oyster and mussel shells.
The ditches included several east-to-west aligned features in the southern trench, one of which contained several sherds of medieval pottery. A large feature exposed in the northern trench was potentially a much more substantial, north-to-south aligned ditch. This produced a single medieval pottery sherd.
The only evidence for earlier activity on the site was a single prehistoric flint flake, which was recovered from the pit of probable medieval date.
Unstratified finds were limited to sherds of post-medieval to modern pottery.
See report (S1) for further details.
