Summary

A geophysical survey of this field in 2021 identified two parallel linear anomalies likely to represent post-medieval or earlier field boundaries. Both of these features correspond with cropmarks visible on aerial photographs (part of a group of probable post-medieval field boundaries recorded as NHER 50819). The only other response of note was a discrete anomaly of uncertain origin.

October 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 16).
This survey identified two parallel north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies, both of which correspond with cropmarks visible on aerial photographs (part of a group of probable post-medieval field boundaries recorded as NHER 50819). The line of the southernmost ditch is continued to the west by a former field boundary depicted on the Salhouse tithe map (S2).
There was no evidence for surviving remains associated with a number of other, more fragmentary cropmarks mapped in this field (part of an extensive group recorded as NHER 50823).
The only other anomaly of note is a weak 'kidney'-shaped discrete anomaly regarded as being of undetermined origin. This potentially represents an archaeologically-significant feature, although a nature origin is perhaps more likely.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 November 2023.

March 2022. Desk-based Assessment.
Updated archaeological assessment of large proposed development.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 March 2023.
