Summary

A series of linear ditch features of a probable medieval to post medieval date are seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The features may relate to a possible trackway and a series of former field boundaries. It is also possible that some of the boundaries may relate to the site of a medieval settlement which has been recorded from documentary sources.

Map

November 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A series of linear ditch features of a probable medieval to post medieval date are seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The features may relate to a possible trackway and a series of former field boundaries. The field boundaries may form part of a wider field system. The features are in close relation to the cropmarks of St Andrew’s church and the suggested site of Irmingland medieval settlement (recorded from documentary sources). It is therefore possible that some of the linear ditches could relate to settlement features. Areas of dense geological cropmarks can also be seen on the aerial photographs and its possible that some of the mapped features may be natural rather than archaeological in origin. Previous excavations ahead of the Bacton to King's Lynn Transco pipeline (NHER 37629) approximately 200m to the north of the site, recorded late Bronze Age to early Iron Age features including pits and post holes. Although the mapped features have been interpreted as dating to the medieval to post medieval period, an earlier date for some of the features cannot be ruled out. The cropmarks of a modern service (not mapped) can also be seen clearly crossing the site (aligned approximately southwest to north east) on S1.
