Summary

A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a new pond at this location in 2012 recorded no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. It is though recorded that the waterlogged conditions encountered would have made it difficult to identify any remains present.

Location

Civil Parish HICKLING, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

August-September 2012. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of relatively shallow new pond as part of Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 6a).
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded. There was therefore no evidence for surviving remains associated with several north-west to south-east aligned drainage channels visible on aerial photographs of the site (part of a group of features of probable post-medieval date recorded as NHER 27288). It is though noted that the identification of features was hampered by the presence of water within the new cut.
A natural deposit of grey orange silty clay was exposed, which was overlain by a thin and intermittent layer of peat. This was in turn overlain by a dark orange brown silty clay.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.14).
