Map

April 2013. Watching Brief.
Maintained during groundworks associated with construction of extension to existing dwelling.
The narrow foundation trenches for this extension were dug to a depth of up to 1.60m below ground level, revealing a sequence of silty layers beneath the uppermost made ground deposits. The lowest deposit exposed was a dark greenish-grey silt that was found to contain fragments of animal bone. This was sealed by a very dark brown peaty silt, which was in turn overlain by clayey silt deposits, one of which produced three sherds of early medieval pottery. The overlying material contained patches of pale silty sand and pale greenish yellow clay, which were sealed by an alluvial greenish-grey silt.
The only feature exposed across much of the site was a construction cut associated with a post-medieval building. This contained a wall footing comprising large stones and bricks bonded with lime mortar. The interior of the building had been infilled with demolition material containing flints and frequent fragments of ceramic building material.
Finds from the uppermost, made ground deposits included a small assemblage of predominantly late post-medieval pottery, a fragment of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stem, at least one fragment of medieval roof tile and small quantities of animal bone and oyster shell.
Medieval roof tile was also recovered from a deposit at the base of one of the trenches. It appears this was thought to be the fill of a cut but unfortunately neither context is described in the report.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2013.271).
