NHER 66861 (Monument record) - Undated and post-medieval ditches

September 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development site.
This survey identified no anomalies of definite archaeological significance. The only responses deemed to be of possible interest are two north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies in the southern half of the site.
An east-to-west aligned band of magnetic disturbance crossing the central part of the field coincided with a former field boundary depicted on the South Wootton tithe map. The land to the south of this boundary has a very different magnetic signature to that of the land to the north, with numerous small dipolar anomalies present. It is suggested this might be the result of material being imported to improve the soil in this particular field.

February-May 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site (Field 1; Trenches 1-16).
The 16 trenches excavated at this location of revealed only two east-to-west aligned ditches. Neither produced any finds but the southernmost feature coincided with the former field boundary depicted on the South Wootton tithe map (S1).
There was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the two north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey.
A small assemblage of unstratified finds was recovered, comprising a potentially Early Neolithic flint bladelet and several medieval pottery sherds.
