Full Description
Carrow Bridge House
Former Bridge Master’s house. This house can be seen on an Ordnance Survey map of 1928 and is presumed to have been constructed around the same time as the current Carrow Bridge, which was erected in 1923 (NHER 843). The late 19th-century Ordnance Survey 1:500 Town Plan map (S1) shows the site to have been previously occupied by a malthouse.
This is a modest two-storey cottage with a pitched pantile roof, pebbledash walls and attractive brick chimney stacks. Its front door has a faux Georgian surround and the fenestration is mainly casement windows. The building is of its time and it is uncertain whether it was the work of J. Butler of Leeds (the bridge designer) or another architect. It has an unusual parallelogram footprint, with its front elevation mirroring the alignment of the adjacent section of the river.
Information from (S2).
P. Watkins (HES), 17 April 2023.
Carrow Bridge House has been empty for a number of years and has suffered damage as a result of poor maintenance and squatters. In 2018 an application was made to demolish the building. This proposal was rejected on the grounds that it would result in the loss of an undesignated heritage asset and harm the setting of the adjacent, locally-listed Carrow Bridge and the wider City Centre Conservation Area. See (S3) for further details.
A subsequent application to demolish Carrow Bridge House was made in 2022. A structural survey was undertaken as part of this second application - see report (S4), which includes various external and internal photographs showing the present condition of the building.
