August 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of fragmented parallel liner ditches of an uncertain date are seen on faintly aerial photographs (S1-S3). It is possible that the features may have related to trackways. Although the date of the features is uncertain, an Iron Age to Roman date is possible. The possible east to west aligned trackway may be cut by the cropmarks of a possible Roman rectilinear enclosure (NHER 65793). It is possible that the fragmented trackway could be an earlier feature, although, this is uncertain. The features are also within an area of medieval to post medieval field boundaries (NHER 21834). It is therefore also possible that the features may relate to medieval to post medieval field boundaries or trackways. Finally, dense geological cropmarks are also visible on the aerial photographs. It is possible that some of the mapped features could be natural rather than archaeological in origin. Multi period (including Roman and medieval to post medieval) finds (NHER 33592) have been previously recorded across the area.
