Summary

An undated ring ditch and pit, possibly the site of a prehistoric round house or a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The size of the ring ditch and an apparent break in its circuit may indicate that it represents the remains of a prehistoric roundhouse, although there are no obvious signs of a larger settlement. It is perhaps more likely to be the site of a round barrow, most probably of Bronze Age date. The pit could relate to a burial. The ring ditch is one of several features visible as cropmarks in this area. The ring ditch is incorporated into the line of a Roman Road (NHER 66763), and two small square enclosures to its east (NHER 66761 and 66762) may be the sites of Iron Age square barrows.

The ring ditch is one of several features visible as cropmarks in this area. The ring ditch is incorporated into the line of a Roman Road (NHER 66763), and two small square enclosures to its east (NHER 66761 and 66762) may be the sites of Iron Age square barrows. The site is part of a clearly complex area of archaeology, where the relationships between different features are unclear.
See the project report (S4) for a more detailed discussion of these sites, and the relationship of the road with the Roman town and industrial suburb of Brampton (NHER 1006 and 1124) approximately 500m to the east.
These cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 36465.
