Full Description
May 2023. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Part of a possible undated ring ditch and a pit, perhaps the site of a prehistoric round house or a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S4). If it is a ring ditch, its small size may indicate that it represents the remains of a prehistoric roundhouse, but it could instead be the site of a small round barrow, most probably of Bronze Age date. The pit could relate to an associated burial. Another possibility is that is a precursor of the post medieval windmill that stood approximately 19m to its south (NHER 34404).
The possible ring ditch is one of several features visible as cropmarks in this area. It appears to overlie (or be overlain by) the southern edge of a Roman road (NHER 66763), and to sit in the northeast corner of a polygonal enclosure or field (part of NHER 36465) which also overlaps the line of the road. The cropmarks are rather confused, and it is possible the ring ditch is in fact part of the corner of this enclosure. A more complete ring ditch (NHER 66759) lies approximately 45m to the east.
These cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 36465.
