Map

January-August 2010. Watching Brief.
Maintained during groundworks associated with St Augustine’s Gyratory road scheme.
Excavations along the route of the new link road between Edward Street and St Augustine’s Street (New Botolph Street) exposed a circular well at this location. The uppermost part of this structure was lined with flint and bricks set in a white chalky mortar, below which it was lined with mortared flint pebbles. It had been capped with 19th- to 20th-century red brick resting on an iron lintel. Adjacent to the well were the fragmentary remains of a cobble surface and a wall of mixed flint and brick rubble. This short section of wall was aligned north-west to south-east and turned through 90 degrees at it south-eastern end, suggesting it had formed the corner of a building or structure.
