Summary

A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a service trench at this location in 2010 recorded a flint and brick wall running parallel to Bakers Road, along with evidence for an associated cellar. The remains of a post-medieval or modern brick structure were also recorded adjacent to the medieval city wall. Although the trench crossed the line of the medieval town ditch (NHER 384) the shallow nature of the trench meant that no associated deposits were exposed.

Map

January-August 2010. Watching Brief.
Maintained during excavation of service trench linking a telegraph pole adjacent to the city wall (NHER 384) to a manhole in the street.
Close to the city wall a layer of mixed 20th-century rubble and soil was present beneath the topsoil. A single fragment of post-medieval stoneware was recovered from this deposit. Removal of this material exposed a floor of soft red brick and the base of a single-skin wall built from hard 'engineering'-type bricks. Both were aligned perpendicular to the city wall.
At the opposite end of the trench a wall was exposed running parallel to Baker Street. This was composed of large flints and fragments of brick set in a soft white, chalky mortar. Natural sands were exposed to the north of this wall, but not to the south, where a dark brown silt sand deposit containing 20th-century rubble was seen. This deposit may well represent the infill of a cellar. These remains probably relate to a row of dwellings that can be seen on the southern side of Baker Street on the Ordnance Survey 1:500 Town Plan map of 1884 (S1).
See report (S2) for further details.
