NHER 67106 (Monument record) - Undated ditch

January 2020-June 2021. Watching Brief and Trial Trenching.
This programme of archaeological work took place during the construction of several new residential dwellings at this location. An unauthorised commencement to the development meant that groundworks had begun in many of the plots before any archaeological work could be undertaken. An initial site visit recorded evidence for considerable ground disturbance in several parts of the site. Subsequent archaeological mitigation included a watching brief maintained during the excavation of several services trenches. These were between 0.5m and 0.7m in depth but did not penetrate modern deposits lain down during the recent construction works.
A trial trench evaluation was also completed, the primary goal of which was to determine whether archaeological remains had been disturbed by the completed groundworks. A total of nine trenches were excavated, which were placed in areas of open ground between more heavily disturbed areas and within the two plots where construction work had yet to commence. The only feature recorded was a substantial north-east to south-west aligned ditch in the north-west corner of the site. No finds were recovered.
