Map

August 2022. Casual Observation.
Noted by member of the public at approximately TL 87412 82499 [1]:
World War Two spigot mortar pedestal. The concrete pedestal is hexagonal with an intact stainless steel pin. It is unclear whether any other elements of the mortar emplacement survive.
See photographs (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 30 May 2023.

Although a mortar pedestal had not previously been recorded at this location on the NHER its presence was clearly known - being marked on a metal 'Heritage Trail' sign showing the location of sites of interest in this part of Thetford. It should be noted that this pedestal lies approximately 125m to the north-west of the reported site of a spigot mortar emplacement that couldn't be located during a survey undertaken in 1994 (NHER 32695). Although this meant it was regarded as most likely destroyed, it is possible that its reported location was inaccurate and that the spigot mortar recorded was actually the one at this site.
