Summary

Part of a probable post medieval drainage system is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. The features are more substantial and prominent than many drainage features, and may represent an attempt to landscape the area. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017), and some features are also visible on more recent Google Earth photography, it is likely that they still survive.

Map

June 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Part of a probable post medieval drainage system is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S3). Drainage features usually fall outside of the scope for AIM recording, but these features are more substantial and prominent than many drainage features, and may represent an attempt to landscape the area. There may be additional earthworks within this broader area (depicted using 'extent of feature'), but these are either too indistinct to map, their archaeological significance is too uncertain, or they correspond with features on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S4). It is likely that the drainage features previously recorded as NHER 2824 are the same as those recorded here, but there is too little information recorded for NHER 2824 to be certain. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017), and some features are also visible on more recent Google Earth photography (S5-S6), it is likely that they still survive.
