Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2023 uncovered a ditch or gully and a probable rubbish pit, both of which produced small quantities of medieval pottery. Further medieval pottery was also recovered from a subsoil deposit in the vicinity of the former. There was therefore evidence for medieval occupation in the vicinity, although the limited nature of the remains uncovered at this site suggests it had probably lain beyond the main focus of activity.

Map

March-April 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The two trenches excavated revealed a ditch or gully and a small rubbish pit that were both of probable medieval date. The latter contained a single medieval pottery sherd, two medieval brick fragments, a small quantity of animal bone and cockle shells. The linear feature contained two medieval pottery sherds of similar date and further medieval pottery was recovered from a subsoil deposit in the vicinity of this feature (along with several fragments of animal bone).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
