Map

October 2017-January 2018. Watching Brief.
Maintained during excavation of shallow scrape to provide material for flood bank enhancement and other improvement works (Scrape 2).
These works exposed a north-west to south-east aligned ditch, the partial excavation of which recovered no dating evidence. The line of this ditch is continued to the north-west by a linear hollow which floods during period of high water. This is one of a number of drainage features of probable medieval to post-medieval date visible on aerial photographs in this area (all recorded as NHER 42448). This particular drainage ditch isn’t shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map and it is suggested that it was probably of 20th-century date, although the available air photo evidence indicates that this is unlikely (appearing as only a faint, infilled hollow on the 1946 photographs).
See report (S1) for further details.
