Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this location in 2013 recorded the remains of a post-medieval building that previously occupied the site. The main walls of this building were constructed of chalk blocks and bricks of probable 18th- or 19th-century date. A cellar wall associated with this building was probably of a later date, being built almost entirely from 19th-century bricks. A presumably reused datestone set in this wall was inscribed ‘J. B. 1793’, which may well provide a date for this house.

August-November 2013. Watching Brief.
Maintained during redevelopment of King Street Square.
These works revealed a number of post-medieval walls, the majority of which related to a building that can be seen at this location on the Ordnance Survey 1:500 Town Plan map of 1883 (S1), to the east of the junction between King Street and Tanner Street. The remains exposed included walls forming the eastern and southern sides of a cellar, which also coincided with the south-east corner of the building. These walls were built from chalk blocks and occasional red bricks. A north-to-south aligned wall of similar fabric exposed to the west was part of the western wall of this building. A brick fragment of possible 18th- or 19th-century date was recovered from this wall. The northern wall of the cellar was also exposed, although this appears to have been set back from the north elevation of the building and was of a different fabric, being constructed mainly of red bricks of probable 19th-century date. Two shallow arched recesses were visible in this wall, as well as a presumably reused datestone inscribed 'J. B. 1793'.
An east-to-west aligned wall composed of chalk blocks and lumps, flint and brick was exposed to the east of the cellar. The nature of this wall is uncertain as although the bricks are of probable 19th-century date it lay within an area depicted as an enclosure rear garden on the 1883 map.
