Summary

The Roman town of Brampton is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The cropmarks have previously been recorded as part of NHER 1006 and 1124, and information covering other work at the site (excavations, geophysical surveys, etc) remains in those records. Amongst other features, the town comprises a polygonal defended enclosure (NHER 66781), parts of the contemporary road network (NHER 66783 and 66782) and extensive areas of fields, tracks and enclosures. The area to the southwest of the defensive enclosure has been characterised as an industrial suburb focused on pottery production and metalworking (NHER 1006). While not all of the cropmarks included in this record necessarily relate to the Roman phase of activity, the character and alignment of the majority suggest most are of this date.
